half way through the harvest

everything this year is happening a month late, the oilseed rape is in at last, and now we will have a quiet week as we have no wheat this year. I rode on the combine yesterday, you get a very different view of the crop and field from in the cab, and I realise how many poppies were in the rape, it did look beautiful when they were flowering, there have been a huge number of poppies around this year. We survived Alevel and ASlevel results day last week, now we know what everyone is doing in the autumn, just need the harvest in to pay for it!

too much mud and rain

The rain has stopped for a few days, and some of the fields have had a chance to dry out a bit, our dog especially enjoyed the flood waters, and some of our crops seem to be surviving their prolonged immersion.  We had a couple of frost, but not heavy enough to freeze the floodwaters enough for skating.  Our cats are spending more and more time on the sofa in the sitting room, I keep turfing them out to do their job of vermin control, and to prove they are working they bring all their corpses to the back door for approval!  We are all getting fed up of all the mud, sometimes the chickens will not come out of their house in the morning, they just sit on their perch looking out on the rain.
